Sergey Solovyov
Sergey Soloviev, film director, born in the city of Kem, Karelian ASSR on 25th of August in 1944. He spent his early childhood in Pyongyang in North Korea. At the age of 3 he moved to Leningrad (today Saint-Petersburg). In 1951 he entered a secondary school and completed studying in 1961. Besides studying he worked as a senior worker of the Leningrad television studio in 1960.
From 1956 to 1961 he collaborated with the Leningrad Bolshoi Drama Theater named after Gorky (chief director GA Tovstonogov) as an actor. From 1956 to 1960 he cooperated with the Leningrad television studio as a host of the children’s and teens’ shows.
In 1962 he joined All-Union State Institute of Cinematography, studio of feature film directing named after professor Romm and finished it as a straight A-student in 1968.
Starting from 1965 he has been permanently working on “Mosfilm” film studio as a screenwriter (wrote more than two dozen set plays and scenarios), filmmaker of the highest category (made 16 films as the director).
He made his debut in a documentary called «Look at the face» (Leningrad studio of newsreel). Film was awarded with a Gold Medal of the Leipzig Film Festival (1963).
Dergee work on the screen — short films based on the stories by Anton Chekhov «Because of doing nothing» and «Proposal» (1967—1968).
The first full-length film is «Egor Bulychov and others» (with Mikhail Ulianov in the lead role) — the screening of a play written by Gorky (1970).
Debut on the television screen — the film «The Stationmaster» (with Nikita Mikhalkov in the lead role), the screening of a story written by Alexander Pushkin. The film won the Grand Prix of Venice Festival of TV films in 1972 (Prix-Italy «for outstanding artistic merit»). The film was also awarded with a Grand Prix of Eurovision in 1972 “The Grand Prix of Easter Sunday."”
In 1974 he finished the film «A Hundred days after the childhood» (here and further — a writer / director). The film was awarded with the State National Prize as well as on of the main prizes of International Film Festival in West Berlin – “Silver Bear” “for the best directing”. The film won a golden medal of the International Film Festival in the city of Avelino (Italy) as well as a Grand Prix (“Golden Kekic”) of the Belgrade International Film Festival “Fest-74” (Yugoslavia).
Since 1982 Sergey Soloviev worked as a teacher: first as the head of director’s studios at the University courses for directors and screen-writers, and then as the head director’s and actor’s studios in the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography. Becoming a professor in 1995 Soloviev graduates more than 10 classes, including a special class of Kazakh filmmakers in 1987. From 1970 to the present he has published more than 50 works on the theory of cinematography in the fundamental theoretical journals.
From 1987 to 1995 Soloviev produced 50 50 special programs devoted to the history of our national cinema in the author's television program «SAS».
In 1982 he was awarded the title «Honored Artist of Russia», in 1991 obtained the title People's Artist of Russia.
From 1980 to the present, he has repeatedly been a jury member of major International film Festivals of «A» class, including the International Film Festival in Venice (three times as a jury member) and Cairo, Egypt (two times as a jury member).

From 1985 to the present day — the secretary of the Union of Cinematographers of the USSR, then of Russia.
From 1991 to 1994. – the Chairman of the Moscow Union of Cinematographers,
from 1992 to 1997 – the Chairman of the Union of Cinematographers of Russia,
from 1993 to 1997. – the Co-Chairman of the Union of cinematographers of CIS and Baltic countries.
Since 1990 – the member of the Goskino of Russia Board. Since 1996 — the Chairman of the Film Commission on the Arts under the Administration of President of Russia.
At the present Soloviev works by his main professions at the film studio «Mosfilm», he is also the Chairman of the Board of the studio «Circle» of the «Mosfilm» film concern. Furthermore, Soloviev supervises the director's studio in the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography and works as the Secretary of the Union of Russia’s Cinematographers of the last convocation and the President of the Union of Cinematographers relations with federal authorities.
Sergey Soloviev is a honorary member of the Russian Academy of arts, the member of National Academy of cinematographic arts and sciences.
