Khanty-Mansi autonomous area — Ugra is situated in the center of West Siberian lowland, which is stretched from the West to the East almost 1400 km, from the north to the south 800 km.

There are 106 municipal unions in tjtal. A district administrative center is Khanty-Mansiysk. The district area is 534,8 thousand square kilometers and it is comparable with territory of France or Ukraine. The highest point is the mountain National (1895m). Population on 01.01.10 is 1 539 thousand persons.

Khanty-Mansi autonomous area takes in the lead positions among regions of the Russian Federation on volume of industrial manufacture, electric power manufacture, oil recovery and gas, volume of investments into fixed capital and receipt taxes into budgetary system.

For the purpose of perfection of technologies of social service in territory of Ugra new forms of working with the population are introduced, local social services operate, mobile social service of the population dynamically develops.

In Ugra the project «the Socially-payment card of «Ugra» developed by the government of the area is realized. This system is directed on the decision of problems of public authorities with a view of improvement of life quality of the population and efficiency of granting of state, municipal and other services to inhabitants of autonomous region.

Today Ugra is not only oil, Spivakov's concerts,Tabakov's performances , Kustodieva's pictures. Creation of conditions for manufacture of new cultural wealth with preservation of the richest original culture of the radical people of the North is the main achievement of regional policy in cultural sphere.

In district's territory 208 establishments of leisure type, 37 modern museums, 240 libraries, fine art galleries, the most interesting centers of crafts and school of arts operate. In Ugra are successfully taken root the system of creative cooperative of young talents of district with leading figures of arts Russian and the world community.

In Ugra there is the unique educational institution — the district Center of arts for North's exceptional children which unites initial, secondary professional and higher education in cultural sphere.

Productive leisure

First of all today's Khanty-Mansiysk is the infrastructure of tourist business with the developed extensive network of high-class hotels, restaurants and cafe, museums, concert halls and showrooms. In autonomous region pass grandiose actions and events of the international and Russian level: festivals, competitions, sports competitions. All these things are the base for development of internal and entrance tourism in this district.

Annually Ugra is visited by about 400 000 tourists. The great interest is represented by ancient culture of hanti and mansy which you can learn better in national settlements and on camps, to live in a plague, to sweep on deer, to learn secrets of national food.

Sporting landmark

Today Ugra is the location of thousands of sports events from the municipal level up to major international competitions in biathlon, volleyball, boxing, water polo. Only in 2010, Khanty-Mansiysk hosted the World Chess Olympic Games, the final stage of Biathlon World Cup, the European Championship Billiards, the international equestrian competition «Cup of Ugra».

Currently, sports and health services to the public districts are based at more than 2 thousand sports facilities that meet the highest requirements and standards. In the district there are swimming pools, stadiums, arena, sport palaces with artificial ice, the biathlon and ski complexes database.

The hockey club «Ugra» was founded in 2006 . For four years the team has gone from the second league of up to two consecutive championship in the highest. Today the team plays in the Continental Hockey League.

Indigenous Peoples'

Khanty, Mansi and Forest Nenets are representatives of Indigenous Peoples. They number over 30 thousand people, or about 2% of the total population of the autonomous area. 2.5 thousand of them lead a traditional lifestyle.
In Ugra there are ethnic communities and businesses. «Ugra Salvation»is the first organization of Indigenous Peoples in the Russian Federation. Its members participate in workshops, scientific conferences, festivals, conventions, for practical ways, the most important thing is the Aboriginal and subsoil relationship. In the District newspapers are published in the languages of the Khanty and Mansi, the daily went on the air TV and radio broadcasts.
